toilet repair

Is your toilet experiencing flushing issues? Our skilled plumbers are here and ready to help! These are some of the steps we will take to fix a faulty toilet flushing mechanism.

1. Diagnosing the Problem

Before fixing your toilet, you need to identify the problem. Common issues include a weak flush, a partial flush, or no flush at all. Other common problems are continuous running or complete non-functionality.

2. Replacing the Flapper Valve

If the flapper valve is faulty, it’s time to replace it. Turn off the water supply to the toilet using the shut-off valve located behind or below the tank. Flush the toilet to drain the water, and remove any remaining water using a sponge or towel. Unhook the old flapper from the flush chain, and take it off its hinges. Install the new flapper in the same position, and reattach the chain. Turn the water supply back on, and let the tank fill up.

3. Adjusting the Flush Chain

A poorly adjusted flush chain can lead to an incomplete flush or water leakage. To fix this, simply adjust the chain’s length. It should have enough slack to allow the flapper to close fully but not so much that it gets caught under the flapper when flushing. A good rule of thumb is to leave about half an inch of slack. Also, ensure the chain is not twisted or tangled because that could interfere with the flushing mechanism’s proper functioning.

4. Cleaning the Flush Valve and Jets

Mineral deposits and debris can accumulate over time, clogging the flush valve and jets. Cleaning them can improve flushing efficiency. To do this, turn off the water supply and flush the toilet to drain the tank. Use a scrub brush, vinegar, or lime dissolver to clean the flush valve and jets thoroughly. Be gentle with the materials to avoid damaging the parts. Once cleaned, turn the water supply back on, and the tank will refill.
