Water Purification and Filtration

You have two core choices for water purification in the home: point of use (POU) and point of entry (POE). POU systems function for a specific tap or appliance, such as the kitchen sink or refrigerator. POE systems function between the water main and the home’s plumbing. We recommend whole-home POE purification systems that give you clean water from every tap and for every appliance. Whole-home filtration also gives more pleasant-tasting water from every tap in your home.

Most water purifiers have a prefilter, a sediment filter, and activated carbon. The prefilter traps the largest particles and protects the more valuable filter media. The sediment filter provides mechanical filtration. The activated carbon improves taste and smell while also adsorbing chemicals and gases. Sediment filters can trap some pathogens depending on their pore sizes. A UV germicidal lamp is even better, as it will neutralize over 99% of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other microorganisms. Some systems are also ENERGY STAR certified.

Water Softeners

Calcium and magnesium are present in most water supplies. They can leave behind deposits, and that’s problematic if the minerals are present at a high concentration. There are a couple of options for water softener service. Anti-scale devices are effective at protecting particular appliances, including water heaters. Water softeners are POE solutions that protect the entire home and deliver an improved shower experience.

Water softeners function by exchanging magnesium and calcium with salt. This requires a tank full of salt-saturated resin beads that will need replenishing over time. Single-tank systems must go offline, usually for about two hours while you sleep. Dual-tank systems never have to go offline. That way, you don’t have to worry as much about overtaxing the system.
