Water Filtration and Purification

What’s the difference between water purification and filtration? It depends on the product, and there’s certainly some overlap. Water filters are often single-stage solutions. Water purifiers typically have several stages and support a higher flow rate.

Should you install a point-of-use or whole-home water purifier? It depends on your water needs and the scope of your water quality challenges. A single point of use system only purifies water from that tap or appliance, such as a kitchen faucet, fridge dispenser, or coffeemaker. A point-of-entry system provides clean water throughout the home, from showers and tubs to faucets and washing machines.

The typical whole-house water purifier we install has two mechanical filters: a prefilter and a primary sediment filter. Activated charcoal is often added as another filtration stage, and its main job is improving taste and smell and adsorbing gases and chemicals. You can also opt for a UV stage that neutralizes bacteria, viruses, cysts, and other pathogens.

Water Softeners

Hard water can cost you significant money in additional plumbing services. This is a different concern than water impurities. The calcium and magnesium in your drinking water aren’t bad for you. That said, those minerals can leave behind scale that is bad for your pipes, fixtures, water heater, and other water-using appliances.

The water softener service we recommend depends on the scope of the problem. If you have moderately hard water, we may only recommend anti-scale devices for susceptible appliances such as water heaters. For homes with hard water, a water softener will generally be best. Such systems remove most of the calcium and magnesium from the water before it enters the home.

They do this by exchanging those minerals with salt. A water softener will run out of salt through use and require recharging. Single-tank systems typically recharge overnight for an hour or two. Dual-tank systems recharge one tank while they continue softening with the other.
